In the 8th round of Eliteserien, it was full VAR drama as Sarpsborg 08 secured a 2-1 win over Fredrikstad on Saturday. An offside disallowed goal eight minutes into extra time was overturned after video review, and thus the hosts could celebrate a win in the Østfold derby. When Victor Halvorsen scored the decisive goal in extra time, the linesman was quickly out with the flag. The situation was unclear on TV images, but after a nearly five-minute check, the VAR room concluded that the disallowed goal was incorrect and overturned the decision. – I felt my heart sink, says Victor Halvorsen to TV 2 about the waiting time before the goal was confirmed. Halvorsen admits to NRK that the win has not sunk in yet. – In my head now, there's a bit of chaos. Maybe I'll see it again, I don't know. But I think it will go a bit more up for me when I come home and get a bit relaxed, says the match winner. What started as an intense football festival was marked by several long breaks. Already in the first half, the referee sent the teams to the dressing room before the extra time was completed due to a drone flying low over the pitch. The police confirmed shortly after that the owner of the drone had been located and removed from the stadium. When the second half was blown in, it took no more than two minutes before the game was stopped again. This time, fireworks were sent up from Fredrikstad's supporters, creating dangerous situations and covering the pitch in smoke. The referee was forced to send the players to the dressing room for the second time in quick succession. After a four-minute break, where the smoke cleared and the fireworks stopped, the game could finally be resumed in the 51st minute. Fredrikstad opened the scoring best in a sporting sense when Fredrik Holmé scored 1-0 after 17 minutes. Sarpsborg 08 responded just before halftime when substitute Victor Halvorsen equalized to 1-1. The match was as expected intense, and the referee handed out a total of six yellow cards in the first half, which was marked by tough duels. Sarpsborg wins their first game of the year since the season premiere, while FFK goes on their fourth consecutive loss. Fredrikstad coach Andreas Hagen seems bitter about the loss to their arch-rivals. – Kristiansund away was weak for us. We should have had that with us. When we meet Viking and Brann, it's tough games. They beat Tromsø 5-0, and they run Rosenborg off the pitch, so we can live with that. But today's game is very sour, says Hagen. Hagen warns that they will analyze the game and work hard to turn the trend. – I just have to work hard every day. There's nothing else to do. So we have to turn a trend here, we're agreed on that, says FFK coach.
